A young boy asked a pastor one day, “What is the purpose of the church?” Not sure what the boy was wanting to know, the little boy simply asked, “Why did Jesus leave us here?” The pastor thought long and hard. He could list many things the church did. His list included: better marriages, better management of finances, discipleship, worship, evangelism, feeding the poor, helping the widows, supporting the missionaries…on and on the list went, but he supposed the little boy was looking for something simpler. After days of thinking on the question, the pastor returned to the little boy and said, “What is the purpose of the church? Only this one thing: to show the glory of God.” The little boy wrinkled up his forehead for a bit and then a smile spread across his face. He looked up at the pastor and said, “Does that mean to make God famous and to show Him off?” The pastor paused and then thought the little boy understood it better than he did.
